Because editing is divided into a number of categories, the services we provide vary according to the needs of the client.
These are the basic services:
Web Site Editing:
Writing well improves your image and your credibility. Combined with good products and/or services, good writing can improve your Web site significantly. For sites that are mainly visual, with brief descriptive text, conspicuous errors in grammar and spelling can significantly reduce the viewer's inclination to continue with the site. And for sites that are mainly verbal (like this one), good writing keeps the visitor reading.
We will thoroughly edit your web pages. We will check for spelling, grammar, vocabulary and style, as well as for coherent visual impact.
As a result of a clear expression of your goals, services and products, people will stay at your site longer and react more positively.
Rate: $35.00 per hour, or by contract for a monthly fee.

Writing:
This process, sometimes called 'ghost writing', involves creating the text. The client is usually someone who either does not have the time or does not have the skills to do the writing themselves. Original writing is time-consuming because there is usually a lot of research and other preparation before creating the actual text. Further, the copyediting (see below) is almost always sub-contracted.
Rate: by contract for whole job. Payment is staged, with twenty five percent in advance.

Substantive Editing:
If a person has produced a manuscript that needs structural and stylistic work, they need a substantive editor. A substantive editor will also make suggestions about the content and purpose of the text, perhaps resulting in a complete rewrite. The author does the actual writing, however. As with original writing, the copyediting may be subcontracted. The reason for this is to separate the functions and thus ensure greater accuracy.
Rate: $35.00 per hour or by contract, whichever most benefits the client.

Although there is considerable overlap between stylistic and substantive editing, the two have important differences. Stylistic editing involves only the overall shape and cohesion of the text. The manuscript may be well thought out and clear as to its purpose, but may not be well written. The text may require reorganizing and rearrangement, as well as changes in overall style. Paragraph and sentence editing are usually necessary. The same person often does both the copyediting and the stylistic editing.
Rate: $25.00 per hour.

Copyediting involves the details of the manuscript: the spelling, the grammar, the punctuation, heading organization, and so forth. A copyeditor may make suggestions in the other areas of editing, but usually these factors have been dealt with by the time copyeditors begin their work.
A good copyeditor frequently consults with the client to determine consistency in spelling, grammar, punctuation and style. Our general resources are "The Chicago Manual of Style" and the "Random House Unabridged Dictionary." Rate: $20.00 per hour

Project Management:
A managing editor is responsible for the whole project from beginning to end. Although the managing editor may contract out each phase of a project, he or she usually performs many of the functions listed above. A managing editor will also see to the design and production of the text in whatever form is appropriate.
